One of the great things about Corpus Christi is the diversity that the town enjoys.
Located where it is, this city has the advantage of attracting people from all
different walks of life and all different cultural and social backgrounds. The
neighborhoods in the city are good indicators of this cultural mix; while they
tend to be as socially homogenous as any piece of Etobicoke real estate far to
the north, together they present a diverse picture of the town. Let's take
a look at the different flavors the city has to offer.
Cowboy culture
Well, even if you wanted to, you can't escape the fact that Corpus Christi
is at heart a Texas town. Texas, of course, means two things: size, and cows.
If you lived in a downtown condominium at 110 Bloor in Toronto, you might never
see a person in walking down the street in a cowboy hat and tight jeans. In
Corpus Christi, however, you might live next door to a professional bull rider.
It's a big city that still has a lot of country twang to it!
Hispanic culture
Did we mention that Corpus Christi is in Texas? That means it is right on the
border with Mexico and, as is the case with many southern states, you can expect
to find a huge Hispanic influence anywhere in the state.
Corpus Christi is certainly no exception to this rule. It's a lot easier
to move to a Texas city from Mexico than to condos in Brampton or some other
northern location, and the surrounding countryside still has the feel of home
as well. More than 50% of the population of the town claims Hispanic or Latino
heritage, and that makes for a diverse community.
Surfers
One of the attractions of Corpus Christi, adding a lot to its physical appeal,
is its location on the Gulf of Mexico. Where there are big waves, there are
going to be surfers, and that is certainly the case in Corpus Christi. You never
know where you will find a surfer off the beach; they could be working at a
gas station, living in King west condos, or defending a client at a trial. It's
only when the smell of the ocean gets in their nostrils that the surfer side
comes out.
We should mention that the surfer sub culture is a part of a strong inclination
for outdoor recreation along the water which is quite prevalent in Corpus Christi.
Wind surfers, thousands of anglers, hunters, kayakers, and wind sport enthusiasts
could all also be included in this category.
Oil
Finally, Texas is a state as well known for oil as it is for roundups. Oil
has brought big money to the state and to cities such as Corpus Christi; executives
with large mansions in the countryside may also develop Yonge Eglinton condos
far up north, they have so much money.
Oil tycoons and their employees make up yet another distinct part of the taste
of the town of Corpus Christi. Their outlook and approach is distinct from the
other groups of people in the city, and they all add up to give this town a
very distinct taste.
